About Daily Kanji

One kanji a day. No overwhelm. Real progress.

Why Daily Kanji Exists

If you have ever tried to learn Japanese, you know the moment it hits you: there are 2,136 Joyo kanji — the characters the Japanese government considers essential for everyday literacy. Textbooks stack them into walls of ink. Flashcard decks stretch into the thousands. Most learners stare at that number, feel the weight of it, and quietly give up.

We built Daily Kanji because we believe that problem is not about willpower — it is about approach. The people who actually learn kanji are not the ones who grind through marathon study sessions. They are the ones who show up for five minutes a day, every day, and let consistency do the heavy lifting. Passive exposure plants the seed. Active review makes it stick. Time does the rest.

Daily Kanji is designed around that insight. Instead of asking you to carve out study time, it meets you where you already are — your lock screen, your home screen, the idle moments between tasks. A new kanji appears each day, and without even trying, you start to recognize shapes, readings, and meanings. When you are ready to go deeper, the full study experience is a tap away.

How It Works

Every morning, a new kanji arrives on your lock screen widget. You see its meaning, its readings, and a memorable keyword — all without unlocking your phone. Throughout the day, each glance reinforces the character passively. That ambient repetition is surprisingly powerful.

When you open the app, the real learning begins. Daily Kanji uses the FSRS algorithm — the same spaced repetition system trusted by researchers and language learners worldwide — to schedule your reviews at the optimal moment. Cards you struggle with come back sooner. Cards you know well fade into longer intervals. The algorithm adapts to your memory, so you spend your time where it matters most.

Each kanji comes with a hand-picked mnemonic — a vivid, sometimes quirky story that ties the character's shape to its meaning. These are not generic dictionary entries. They are crafted to be memorable, connecting radicals and strokes to images you will not forget. Over time, you stop needing the mnemonic at all — the kanji just clicks.

Your progress is tracked in a kanji garden, where every character you learn grows from a seed into a bloom. It is a quiet, visual record of how far you have come — and a reminder that even on days when five minutes feels like nothing, the garden keeps growing.

What Makes It Different

Most kanji apps ask you to build a habit before you have even started. Create an account. Pick a deck. Configure your settings. Set a daily goal. By the time you reach your first flashcard, your motivation has already been spent on logistics.

Daily Kanji takes the opposite approach. Install it, and you are learning. The widget starts delivering kanji immediately — no account required, no configuration, no onboarding flow. The app is designed for people who are busy, curious, and maybe a little skeptical that they can actually learn 2,000+ characters. We believe in earning your trust one kanji at a time.

Content is organized by JLPT level — N5 through N1 — so whether you are just starting with basic characters or pushing toward advanced literacy, the material matches where you are. You do not need to know what JLPT means to benefit from the structure; the app naturally guides you from simple, high-frequency kanji to more complex ones.

And because the app is built around passive-first learning, it fits into the life you already have. You do not need to find thirty minutes. You do not need to sit at a desk. You just need to glance at your phone — something you were going to do anyway.
